I've just migrated my site from J1.5 to J3.9

I've just migrated my site from J1.5 to J3.9 and my host tells me the extra resources needed will require an upgrade to my hosting meaning the cost will treble. Anyone got any suggestions or recommendations please.. I'm on a shared hosting package.
